Upgrading Your Mental Software

As a true Silicon Valley tech nerd, I’ve been thinking a lot software and product updates - and how many of us are so keen on getting the latest tech gadgets.

Updating our tech gadgets is the norm and an everyday part of how we operate. We seem to get pinged about new releases and updates all the time, which naturally causes people to chase the next chicest, slimmest, and shiny new object. With something faster, better and newer on the market, folks tend to get frustrated with the existing: clunky, slow, fidgety.

Which leads me to ask: why is it that people are more keen on upgrading their software and tech gadgets, than they are about upgrading their own mindset?

We need to normalize that upgrading our mental software is equally as important as upgrading our tech software.

Why is it that people are more keen on upgrading their software and tech gadgets, than they are about upgrading their mindset?

The simplest way to pick apart this analogy and to put it into perspective:

  • Old, buggy, glitchy programming is frustrating and slows us down. When we continue to operate on poor thoughts and old wiring, it too will hold us back and slow us down. Thoughts needs to be cleaned up and fine tuned, too.

  • Even our computers need a break and to be rebooted every once in a while. The same goes for our minds. We’re not meant to operate at the same speed and in the same capacity all the time, and when we hit a wall, that’s time we need to reset.

  • Tech is always iterating. As the creators behind it, so should we.

I guess what I’m getting at is how silly it seems that these products and companies are constantly striving to be better and more improved - but humans don’t always hold the same standards for themselves.

It baffles my mind when an employee who has worked on product version 1 all the way onto product version 10 and hasn’t scaled at the same rate. What does it say about both the individual, and the organization, when the product and software has upgraded, but the people haven’t?

It takes a different way of operating and a different way of thinking to get to that next level. Because what gets you here, won’t get you there. And without constantly upgrading, you get left behind.

So, let’s commit to upgrading ourselves, just as fast as we upgrade our tech, shall we?
