A New Chapter
During this coronavirus pandemic, I’ve had significantly more downtime, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking a lot about what my next stage would look like. How rare is it to have down time to actually stop, pause and think in the midst of a world that is fast moving and changing. Most might only look at the catastrophic times that we live in right now, but to me, I’ve been truly embracing and relishing every single moment of it. It’s brought about a lot of introspection, insight, and healing.
Moving to LA is a new chapter, for me to start fresh, embrace more of my creative and innovative side. But what does a ‘creative’ side in corporate business actually look like? For me, it means being able expand beyond the box of what I am accustomed to and what is comfortable. It means to bring into balance my left side business brain, one that’s obsessed with researching, facts, and numbers, with a more right sided brain of holistic thought, feelings and emotions.
As I follow this train of thought on my journey, a few things come up:
1) Business psychology: I’ve always had an interest in positive psychology, organizations and people management. My gut tells me to continue chasing this train, of pairing a research-focused mind with a more practical application of psychology in the workplace; moreover, of being able to coach individuals through these findings and concepts on a more personal level. I’m committed to helping inspire others to find and live happiness in their lives, creating awareness of how individuals can empower themselves to live out a life that is meaningful and fulfilling. We spend a majority of our life working, so life’s too short to be unhappy and to work in environments that limit our true capabilities.
2) Conscious Leaders and Conscious businesses : Which came first, the business or the leader? Businesses and entrepreneurial ventures have a huge opportunity and potential to expand their scope and value in ways other organizations and communities can’t: by using their mission and profits to serve stakeholders across multiple facets. Businesses and brands can go so much further and augment their value creation if leaders have the right vision, intention, focus, and desire to do good for their stakeholders all around, whether it be customers/clients, employees, community, or environment. I’m committed to changing the dialogue of how we perceive businesses, in changing the dialogue that the true value creation of business goes well beyond that of solely making money or providing a product/service.
Mostly, this thought leadership has been inspired by the book I’ve been reading, Conscious Capitalism, written by John Mackey and Raj Sisodia. So far it’s been really fascinating, and I’m interested in getting more plugged into the local community chapter and maybe becoming certified down the line.
For anyone interested in learning more about conscious capitalism, here are a few videos that got me going on this topic.
I actually cried when I watched John Mackey’s talk because it resonated so strongly with me.
